Anderson A4 Dovetailed Smoothing Plane With Ebony Infill

Known mainly for his organic and free flowing infill planes, this small Wayne Anderson A4 coffin sided dovetailed smoothing plane, with Gabon ebony infill, follows a more traditional style made popular by Stewart Spiers and Thomas Norris. This plane also features an inlay of ivory in the front bun.

Measuring only 5-1/2″ in length and 1-11/16″ at its widest point, the brass sides have been expertly dovetailed to the steel sole, making the joint itself a feature of the overall plane.

The cutting iron is 3/16″ thick and 1-1/4″ wide and has been bedded at 55 degrees. The exquisitely made adjuster has a 9/32″ thread at 40TPI, and the shape of the screw heads and the knurling, along with the ultra-fine mouth, are of particular note.

The front and rear infills are made from solid jet black Gabon ebony and have a diamond of ivory inlaid into the top of each piece. Though it’s small in size, this plane is quite heavy and would make short work of even the most gnarled or knotty grain.

The plane is signed “Wayne Anderson, 2008” on the left rear brass sidewall.
