American-Made Side Infill Skew Rabbet Plane

Here’s a rabbet plane with a difference. Unlike most infill rabbet planes which are “U” shaped affairs, metal-wise, and have the infill sandwiched between the two side plates, the maker of this infill plane has decided to make more of a feature of the infill wood and have it inlaid into one side of the plane. Of course it goes without saying that the result is amazing.

There really has been some stunningly figured walnut used on this particular infill plane, as can be seen in the pictures. Furthermore, the maker has skewed the cutting iron so that not only does the plane cut more efficiently, it also makes it more obvious that the plane is to be used on the one side only (which makes sense given its construction).

The infill is made up of several layers, making the construction of the bed easier than it would if it had to be cut from a single piece. It has been secured to the cast iron body by screws positioned in various locations. Like all skewed planes of this type the neck of the 15/16″ wide cutting iron has been profiled for a snug fit. The escapement and wedge have also been done well, and its safe to say that there has been great care shown in making this plane.

The plane is 8-1/2″ in length, 3″ high and 15/16″ wide.
