Spiers No. 7 Dovetailed Coffin Smoother Plane

Here is a late model Number 7 dovetailed coffin sided smoothing plane by the master of infill planemaking, Stewart Spiers of Ayr in Scotland. Featuring a beautifully figured Brazilian rosewood infill, this plane has a very tight mouth, making it a perfect user plane for any cabinetmaker.

The open handle on this plane has a perfect spur — nice and thin and elegant. Unfortunately the very nature of a delicate spur means that they are very easily damaged, but this one seems fine. There is, however, a very faint crack at the base of the handle which also happens quite often on these planes. As alluded to earlier there is a very nice contrast of colours throughout the figuring on the rear infill of this plane.

The parallel cutting iron is 2″ wide and almost full length.

A nice example from the father of infill bench planes.
