22-3/4″ Rosewood & Iron Jointer Plane By Melhuish

Here is a rare 22-3/4″ long jointer plane marked “MELHUISH, LONDON” on the gunmetal lever cap. Richard Melhuish & Sons were a retail business which operated out of Fetter Lane, Holborn in London. Melhuish planes were made by other makers, primarily Thomas Norris or Stewart Spiers, and merely stamped with the retailer’s name. This particular plane would have been made for them by Stewart Spiers.

The plane would no doubt have been purchased at the same time as the Melhuish gunmetal smoothing plane found elsewhere on this site. The rosewood on this one is particularly pretty, showing nice variegation on both the front and rear infill, as well as the rear handle.

The front cushioned bun and the spur on the rear handle are nice and crisp and have not been damaged at all. The parallel cutting iron is made by James Howarth of Sheffield and is 2-1/2″ wide.

A very nice and collectable infill plane.
