Slater 24″ Cast Iron Overstuffed Jointer Plane

Here is a rare Henry Slater cast iron jointer plane which has been overstuffed in Brazilian rosewood, and features an enclosed heel and toe, leaving the infill to be “boxed in”.

This particular infill would probably be one of Slater’s earliest planes, as he soon concentrated on making his own versions of smoothing planes and shoulder planes almost exclusively. Needless to say panel planes and jointers made by Slater are not easy to come by.

This one is a beauty, weighing in at a rather uncomfortable 24″ long, with a 2-1/2″ cutter. It would also have quite some heft behind it, and I’m not sure I’d want to be using it for any great length of time.

As you can see the rosewood is quite spectacular — especially on the rear handle. Slater also had his own distinctive style of shaping the front bun — not to mention his unique style of lever cap screw.

Henry Slater worked from 1868 to around 1909 in Clerkenwell, London.
