Slater Steel-Faced Gunmetal Chariot Plane

Henry Slater is mostly renown for his smoothing planes and shoulder planes but he did make other planes as well, such as this attractive little chariot plane.

The plane is cast in gunmetal but has a steel-faced sole for added wear resistance. The wedge and infill are made from Brazilian rosewood.

Measuring in at 3-3/8″ long and 1-3/8″ wide and featuring a 1-1/8″ wide “Hildick, Warranted” cutting iron, this plane is marked with Slater’s Meredith St., Clerkenwell, London address, where Slater worked from 1873 to 1877.
