Melhuish Steel-Soled Gunmetal Smoother Plane

The retail business of Richard Melhuish & Sons operated from the Fetter Lane, Holborn address from 1828 to 1903 and the firm was well known for their selection of quality woodworking tools and machinery. This particular plane would have undoubtedly been made for them by T. Norris around the turn of the century.

Unhandled and featuring an ebony infill, this coffin smoothing plane features a steel sole to cut down on wear and tear. Not that it looks like it’s seen a lot of work, as its in quite good condition.

A well sought after and collectible infill plane commanding an equally high price tag! In fact this particular plane sold on eBay for $2026.00 U.S. in December 2009.
