Norris Number 14 Smoother Plane

Unmistakably a Norris No. 14 smoothing plane, but stamped with “W. Short, Essex Rd., N” on the gunmetal lever-cap. W. Short was a London-based toolmaker and dealer trading in the early 1900’s. Thomas Norris would have supplied the plane to Short unstamped so that the dealer could put his own name on the plane.

Construction-wise, the plane is made from annealed iron, which resisted breakage more so than a normal cast iron plane would.

This infill plane is 7-1/2″ in length and 2-5/8″ wide, and comes with a 2-1/4″ wide cutting iron made by Ward.

A superb quality plane from T. Norris of London, whose catalogues you can see at the links below (courtesy of Handplane Central).
