Gunmetal & Ebony Chariot Plane By Buck

Steel soled, cast gunmetal bodied chariot plane by Buck of Tottenham Court Road, London. This plane has an ebony wedge and front bun and a rosewood bed. The wedge features a very attractive “cupid’s bow” decoration, and there is a steel strike button at the rear.

Although this particular plane was sold by Buck, it is very likely that the plane was actually made by G. Miller of 24 Ampton St., Gray’s Inn Rd. in London. The chariot follows closely the style of a G. Miller made plane and, as Miller manufactured many planes that were not stamped with his mark, it is not unusual, and indeed most likely, that this plane is one of his.

This chariot plane is 4″ long and has a 1-3/4″ wide cutter.

As stated above, many planes were made by other makers and merely stamped or sold by Buck, though it’s important to note that a good number of Buck planes were not stamped at all. This plane is one of those which fit in the latter category.
