User-Made Ebony Infilled Bullnose Plane

An nicely shaped user-made cast iron bullnose plane of some vintage. I’m not sure how old this plane may be, but I would probably place it around the 1880 to 1900 mark (though that’s just a guess). While there are no refinements, such as chamfering along the edges for example, it is still a well made little hand plane.

The plane is 3-7/8″ long and 1-1/8″ wide. The ebony wedge has been knocked about a bit but is otherwise sound, as is the ironwork, showing only signs of superficial pitting.

The cutting iron, however, is a different matter. There’s really nothing left of this one. Finding a replacement iron though is not that difficult as there are plenty out there, old and new, that will do the trick.

There is no bed infill on this one and it’s hard to say if there ever was. However, that’s not a problem on a plane of this size and purpose, as it’s only used for taking light cuts.
